it’s Friday, that’s our Sunday to the uninitiated. We skipped the regular 8:30 am church service this morning and did some family stuff… First off, French toast in the dining room… thomas didn’t want any till e put some strawberries and blueberries on it, then of course, Daniel had to have the saem so our french toast turned into berries on french toast, which was ok by me…
we didn’t know what was happening this weekend, I tried to look up what was happening up in Lossail – the grand prix race track, turns out it is a quiet weekend up there, so we decided to head to the old faithful, the corniche. as a bit of a change, we parked down by the fishing boats to see what was happening.
Kind of a slow Friday morning(it was 9:30 when we got there) and it was starting to get hot. the car told us 36. we walked around, saw TONs of minnows. this was cool cause although we have spent a fair bit of time near the Persian gulf, we really haven’t seen much in the way of wildlife in the water… so the boys, and rorosie were all really interested in watching the fish swim around.
we walked over to the boats, probably a few hundred of them and on there you see the workers mending nets, cleaning the boats and hanging out. a few of them were fishing – they take little pieces of bread, throw it into the water then attach some bread to a hook and wait when a fish comes close to the hook, they quickly yank the hook out of the water, flinging bread, seaweed and fish hooks everywhere… needless to say in the hour we were there I think only one fish was caught. Daniel was OK with this, he didn’t understand why they didn’t have water int eh bucket for the fish… he didn’t ask, I didn’t tell<grin>
walked around more, and noticed some clouds in the water… big clouds… big clouds that were moving… there were huge schools of fish swimming around below the boats. To estimate the size, I’d guess maybe 5 feet long and 20 feet wide? You know the flocks of birds that fly around late summer? and they darken the sky with their numbers? Rosie does, she loves chasing them… well this was like that, massive numbers of fish all swimming in unison. Pretty cool stuff…
I think we hung out at the harbor for 90 minutes, walking round, looking at crabs, fish, people, boats.
Went back to the truck and had a picnic under a palm tree… threw the ball for Rosie, then packed up and headed home…
Not so much.
turns out at the other end of the corniche, there was a boat race. a speed boat race, grand prix in the water… so we all pile out and watch these boats tear around the harbor.. I am sorry I don’t have pictures… I’ll try to make it down there again this weekend so I can show you what we saw. it’s pretty cool though.
